My Stepdad, Art Woods, was a man of many hobbies, almost all of which were interesting to me. One of the first ones I embraced as one of my own was restoring cars. In particular Alfa Romeos. Art had several old cars when he and my mother met when I was just entering junior high school. He had MGs, Austin Healys, a Studebaker, a Morris Minor, a Ford Model T and several Alfas. I fell in love with the Alfa’s. I referred to them as a poor man’s Ferrari. When I was 15 or 16, Art and I went to a junk yard and bought a 1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider that had “Junk” written on the title. We restored that car together, I’m sure with him doing most of the work. We rebuilt the 1300 cc all alloy twin overhead cam engine, patched up some holes in the floor boards and had the car repainted it’s original Italian Red. That was the car I drove in high school and I’ve had Alfa’s off and on ever since.
